design+democracy project

In 2013 Claire established the Design+Democracy (D+D) Project, a research unit in the College of Creative Arts Toi Rauwhārangi at Massey University, in response to the New Zealand Electoral Commission’s 2013 call for academic help in reversing New Zealand's then rapidly declining voter turnout. D+D has combined digital technology with design and user engagement to produce the hugely popular and award winning youth voter advice applications: On the Fence during the 2020, 2017 and 2014 New Zealand general elections, Cannabis Convo (2020) and VoteLocal (2016) . On the Fence and Vote Local have both contributed to rising youth voter turnout levels, have won Gold Pin Awards at the Designers Institute of New Zealand Best Awards in the Public Good category, and Vote Local won the Social Innovation Award at the Good Design Awards Australia in 2017.
